The Fly-In Fly-Out program is a highly customized and specialized program specifically for airmen offered by Zeeba Sleep Center in Las Vegas. Which is an accredited sleep center with the AASM. The purpose of the program is to determine if an airman has sleep apnea and then if appropriate to initiate immediate treatment so that the airman’s medical certificate is never in jeopardy.
The new FAA guidelines provided to AME’s specifically requires that the AME evaluate for sleep apnea risk. If risk of sleep apnea is deemed to be high, then the AME is obligated to inform the FAA and inform the airman that 90 days will be allowed to complete a sleep apnea evaluation and if appropriate prove compliance on treatment. The airman must also be informed that once a sleep study is performed and the airman is diagnosed with sleep apnea, he may no longer exercise the privilege of the medical certificate until treatment compliance data has been provided to the FAA.
The airman thus has 2 options. Option 1, wait until the AME exam and if at that exam sleep apnea risk is determined to be high, then proceed with a sleep apnea evaluation. Or Option 2, self determine if sleep apnea risk factors are present utilizing available risk assessment tools that include the STOP BANG questionnaire or the smartphone App – ZeeAppnea and if risk is determined to be high proceed with a sleep apnea evaluation. The advantage of being evaluated prior to the AME exam is that when the airman presents for the AME exam with documentation that a sleep assessment has been initiated, a further 90 days will be provided to comply with FAA requirements for SI and this will not affect the medical certificate. The difference between Option 1 and Option 2 , is that in Option 1, once a sleep study is performed and a diagnosis is made the medical certificate privileges cannot be exercised until compliance data is submitted to the FAA, this does not apply to Option 2.
With either Option 1 or 2, the Fly in Fly out program will provide expedited evaluation and treatment of sleep apnea, that will not allow for any lapses in medical certificate privileges.
The Fly in Fly out program begins with a trip to Las Vegas, a meeting with a board certified sleep physician and an overnight sleep study. Treatment will be initiated the morning after the sleep study and the airman will return home with the appropriate treatment. Treatment will be monitored remotely. All the FAA required documentation will be submitted per FAA guidelines. Once the documentation is submitted the Airman is in compliance with FAA regulations. The Fly in Fly out program is specifically designed to ensure that the Airman remains in compliance with his medical certificate at all times.
